Historic Memphis Walking Tour

This two-hour walking tour of Memphis explores the city’s rich history at a fun and leisurely pace. You’ll explore Court Square, the lovely and historic heart of 19th century Memphis; enjoy sweeping views of the Mississippi River; and hear fascinating tales of rebels, cotton barons and bootleggers. You’ll also experience a time-honored Memphis tradition, the famous March of the Ducks at The Peabody Hotel. Along the way you’ll see:

• Fourth Bluff Park, overlooking the Mississippi River
• Civil War sites (the Battle of Memphis and Forrest’s Raid)
• Cotton Row
• Deadman’s Alley
• Main Street, and Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.’s last march

NEW FOR 2025: Add on an optional guided tour of the historic Orpheum Theater! The Orpheum – downtown’s premier venue for touring Broadway shows and top-tier live performances – has had a fascinating, storied role in the history of Memphis. As you explore the beautiful art deco rooms of the Orpheum, theater docents will tell you the history of this incredible building: born in 1890, reborn after fire in 1928, revitalized in 1977 and saved from demolition in 1984. From the days of vaudeville to the latest Broadway shows, it’s a story of resilience and reinvention that could only happen in Memphis. As you tour the grand art deco lobby and backstage areas, you’ll delight in the colorful and creative murals that stars and productions have painted on the backstage walls, and learn about Mary, the theater’s sweet and mischievous little ghost. You’ll also hear stories of the poignant legacy of segregation in Memphis.

The Orpheum Theater Tour add-on will be available on select Mondays, Tuesdays and Wednesdays beginning in January, 2025.
